In designing the Oubaai 18-hole championship golf course and driving range, Ernie Els and his team have taken full advantage of the spectacular site. They had the support of Nicklaus Design as technical advisors. Nicklaus Design is the privately held company of golf legend Jack Nicklaus and his family.
The members' clubhouse has a dramatic location that overlooks the 16th, 17th and 18th greens. Open-air terraces offer panoramic views of the Indian Ocean and the Gwaing River valley. As you walk the course, the scenery changes from forest to sea, from river to mountain.
The Els design philosophy is based on flexibility. Concepts are moulded according to the landscape, not vice versa. The aim is to produce courses that are fun to play and that enhance the surrounding environment. In addition, the courses fairly display challenges and hazards while affording players the opportunity to use a full range of shots and plan strategically for individual holes.
